"I’ve been photographing along the Mississippi since I was in college. It runs right through my town and is an obvious path to follow. I began to think that the river itself could function as a metaphor for that kind of wandering. If you look at a map, the river doesn’t go strictly north to south. It carves this crazy path all over the place. That is really what I wanted to do…wander. Of course, this is a huge part of the mythology of the river; Huck Finn and all of that."
